DIAMONDS: THE 4 CS

EVALUATING DIAMONDS QUALITY

Each diamond possesses distinctive characteristics, and ensuring its quality and assessing its value is a meticulous task involving a detailed inspection by an expert gemologist. This process is based on what is known as the 4 Cs: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight, all of which are determining factors in validating a diamond’s quality and quantifying its worth.

1. Carats (weight): The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats and abbreviated as ct. The equivalency is 1 carat = 0.20 grams = 200 mg = 100 points. (Note the difference between ct, a unit of weight, and Kt, a unit of gold purity)

2. Color: In today’s market, there is a wide variety of diamond colors. Color is measured on a gradual scale from D to Z. The closer to D, the more colorless the diamond; the closer to Z, the more yellowish it appears. Diamonds can also come in pink, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown. Intensely colored diamonds are known as "fancy colors." Depending on the color, these are incredibly rare and highly valued.

3. Clarity: Diamonds have natural impurities formed during their creation, known as inclusions. Inclusions, depending on type, size, and location, can influence the way light reflects through the diamond and can affect its brilliance. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, and a 10x magnifying loupe is used for evaluating and classifying clarity.

4. Cut: The quality of a diamond’s cut is determined by its proportions, symmetry, and polish. A well-cut diamond reflects nearly all incoming light through the crown and across to the opposite end, enhancing its brilliance.

DIAMOND CERTIFICATES: PRUNÉS’ PIECES WITH DIAMONDS STARTING AT 0.20 CT ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A DIAMOND CERTIFICATE ISSUED BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCREDITED AND RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS (GIA, HRD, IGI, JORGC, AND OTHERS).
